Social Psychology and Second Language Leaning.
今更読むのもなんだけど…。motivationとorientationの違いをはっきりさせたくて読み直してみました。やはり名著ですねぇ…。要点だけ。
・第二言語習得とは、social psychological phenomenon であるがゆえに、「外国語学習が行われる環境」に注意を向けることが必要。この本は、特定のコンテクストのもと、attitudeとmotivationが目標言語の習得にどの様な役割を果たしているかを解明することを目的としている。
・第二言語習得は、他の教科とは以下の点で一線を画している。言語は単なる「コード」ではなく、その国の文化の一部である。その様な特質を持つ言語を学ぶには、目標言語のみならずその文化をも受け入れる柔軟な姿勢が必要である。言語を習得しようとする場合、その言語を自分のbehavioral repertoire に加えるくらいのことが必要なので、他教科よりももっと根源的な部分が関わってくる。そのため、その目標言語に対するattitudeが、目標言語の習得の度合いと強く関連すると考えられる。
・目標言語を学ぶ環境という意味では、当然、コースや教師へのattitudeも習得度合いに関わってくる（p.7下の方）。
・attitudeとは…　an individual’s attitude is an evaluative reaction to some referent or attitude object, inferred on the basis of the individual’s beliefs or opinions about the referent.
日本語にすると……　人間が、自分の信条や考え方を頼りに、「あるモノ」を自分なりに評価し、その「あるモノ」に対して抱くもの　とでも言いましょうか。
・motivationとは…　combination of effort plus desire to achieve the goal of learning the language plus favorable attitudes toward learning the language. これらの個々の要素が合わさったものがmotivationである（それぞれの要素一つではmotivationとは言わない）。motivation = effort + want + affect. さらに、motivationはgoal directedである。 p.54には、motivation = attitude toward learning the language, desire to learn the language, and motivational intensityとあり。
・orientationとは…class of reasons to for learning a second language.　　 An integrative orientation = class of reasons that suggest that the individual is learning a second language in order to learn about, interact with, or become closer to, the second language community. でも、orientationだけあってもダメ。motivationがないと。

結局…motivationは、実際に学習する意欲を含んでいる。orientationは、L2コミュニティーに対する態度のようなもの。実際の学習からはorientationの方がより「遠い」く、motivationの方がより直接的。
